108 Doors of Rajasthan

I don’t know what compelled me to do it. I just couldn’t help myself: in various Rajasthani cities that we walked in, I took pictures of doors.

These are not localized in a special place. They’re simply random doors I came across while wandering through various residential areas, poor and rich alike. Almost every single one of them is the front door to someone’s house.

108 is a sacred number in Hinduism. So, fittingly, here are my 108 doors of Rajasthan:

Gazing out the train window into a bland, undifferentiated Rajahstan landscape one early morning I was surprised by a show of color in the near distance. The train slowed enough to allow me to watch the color form into a woman in a brilliantly colored sari – color every bit as rich and stunning as the doors you’ve photographed. Thanks for the r eminder of the vivid colors of India.

My visits to Chicago aren’t complete without getting to see, at the Rosenthal Clinic, your wonderful photos of children. My 20 month old granddaughter and I are equally captivated by them. Dr. Rosenthal is my sister and Rachel/Loren my niece. All the best to you!

I find wood doors fascinating because the material is from the nature and some doors have patina that only time can give.

They are in a way a connection to a different place; maybe even a connection to a different time period.

108 is a very special number in Chinese culture as well. Pretty much every Chinese would know about 108 heroes from Water Margin (one of the Four Great Classical Novels in Chinese literature).

Amazing variety of forms, colors, door frames, associated artwork. What is even more fascinating is that, as you point out, each one opens into another unique, personal world.
